The history of the internet object cache hierachy at the Otto-von-Guericke-University
Magdeburg
The federated cache system was founded by
Daniel Schild and
Jens Elkner.
-
In April 1996, we started with one HP-UX workstatation, hosted by the
Department of Computer
Science, and one Sun Solaris workstation, hosted by the
Institute
for Computer Networks and Operating Systems, useing the
Harvest Cache Software.
For our tests, only one cache has had bidirectional relationships
to extern neighbor caches at the FU Berlin,
TU Chemnitz, DKRZ Hamburg and the Universities Bochum and Mainz.
-
In September 1996 we switched over to the Squid Internet Object Cache and
integrated the third cache, hosted by the Department of Mathematics,
for a better load distribution and a bigger overall cache size.
At
this point, we decided to setup a cache hierarchy and to use the new
founded DFN
Cache Service in B-WiN.
A new Sun Solaris workstation with ATM
connection was setup as a dedicated parent cache (FIN cache) for all
other caches only and as client of the DFN Caches.
All bidirectional
relationships to extern neighbors have been canceled, except to
the TU Chemnitz (same B-WiN node).
The FU Berlin, FSU Jena and DKRZ Hamburg are still useing this parent
as one of their neighbors.
-
In November 1996 the 4th cache (Med1 Cache), hosted by the Medical Academy, joined our
cache hierarchy, with the primary purpose of reducing the load on
their firewall and the traffic between the backbones of the
university and the academy.
-
In April 1997, the Computer Center of our
University decided to setup a proxy cache (URZ Cache) as well,
which was integrated in our hierarchy at the beginning of March 1997.
- May 97: DKRZ Hamburg doesn't use our parent cache as sibling anymore (switched over to DFN caches).
- July 97: TU Chemnitz doesn't use our parent cache as sibling anymore (switched over to DFN caches).
In August 1997, our parent cache got an upgrade from 64 to 384 MB RAM and
from a 6 GB to a 12 GB HDD caching area. Also the cache of the
University Computer Center got an upgrade from 128 to 384 MB RAM and
from a 1 to a 8 GB HDD caching area.
This big power gave us the opportunity, to take the two other caches
of the Department of Computer Science and the one cache of the
Department of Mathematics smoothly out of duty in the following months.
-
In September 1997, the Medical Computer Center
installed a second cache (MRZ cache), which has been integrated into the
university cache hierarchy. When the complete transition to
this cache has been made, Med1 cache will be taken out of duty.
-
October 1997: Due to the changes in the DFN chache hierarchy we use
only 4 of the DFN caches anymore (Leipzig, Nuernberg for .com, Berlin,
Hamburg for !.com).
Med1 cache is of duty.
-
November 1997: Because of the slow response of the DFN-caches, their
status was changed from parent to sibling in the middle of the month.
-
Februar 1998: The proxy cache of Boerde e.V. (BEV) is a new child of the FIN cache.
-
May 1998: FIN cache got an RAM upgrade (384 MB -> 512 MB); Neighbor relation with proxy cache of the TU Chemnitz has been skipped. First use of redirectors
(jesred 1.0) for replacing advertisment
pictures (which really slow down the complete download of many W3 pages).
-
June 1998: New add. HDD cache for the FIN Cache (upgrade from 12 to 24 GB).
As well it got a new child: proxy cache of the Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium (WSG).
The HDD cache of the URZ cache was changed back from 1 GB to 8 GB. Since now
it is using the FIN Cache as sibling only (previously as parent).
Current Status
At this time, the FIN cache is used as parent by 4 caches (MRZ, BEV, WSG
and Testcache1).
It is used as sibling by 4 caches (the URZ, the ZRZ of the TU Berlin and the
FSU Jena).
The FIN-Cache itself has 4 siblings (DFN Caches Leipzig, Nürnberg, Berlin,
Hamburg) and no parents.
